You are sitting at home. It’s evening. For a while not you are feeling something is wrong. At first, you couldn’t figure out what it is – you’re the same person you always were. Where did this uneasiness, following you around, come from? That troubling feeling when you wake up in the morning, and when you go to sleep in the evening? Now things are clear – it’s your relationship. Things are not working the way they did anymore, and you feel that it’s no longer possible to bridge this gap; and your tried, how you have tried. You have given up on so much of your self, a bit more every time, and it is just not working. You feel that you’ve gone as far as you can, and it’s time to end it. You’ve been thinking about it for the last few weeks, gathering bits of courage, composing yourself. You do not want to hurt him – he was there with you, for you, in those joint, happy moments, which are engraved in your memory forever. You are sad, but determined – this ends today. You are full of fear and uncertainty, and still: today you are starting a new road. Today, your life is beginning to return to that blessed balance, to believing in yourself. Today you are starting to hope again. You enter the living room, and look at him. He sits, watching television. You see he’s very sad, barely communicating, and as you gather one last ounce of strength, he says: “baby, I want to talk.” You sit by him. He puts his hand on your thigh, looks directly at you, and says, choked: “I want to break up”. What happens now? How do you think this situation will unfold? The earlier doubts have proved unwarranted. Both sides have the same wishes; there is no anger or resentment, and both reached – each in his own way – an acceptance, at least partial, with this decision. All that’s left is to cry, hug, talk for a while and lay off some of the burden that’s been stacked on them, especially during those  last weeks, and get on their own separate ways. Yes, they will still remain good friends. Yes, they still care about each other. They are starting off on a new way, filled with hope. Finally. Not exactly. As it turns out, in many cases, unintuitively, the “rejected” parter (the one that has not initiated the break up), would say: “Let’s give it another chance! We can make it work, we have so much to lose and so little to gain…”. I found out about this phenomena a few years back, while working with a good friend on creating computer games. After a rough period with one of our partners, and a few extremely tense weeks, during which we got the distinct feeling that he wants out, we talked to him the phone and told him that it might be time to break apart. He immediately said: “I think we still have a lot of potential together; there’s no need to jump to conclusions. Let’s take a while and decide what to do”. He sounded almost whimpering. After we finished the conversation, I told the friend that we have just witnessed the “Rejected Girlfriend Syndrome” (RGS) (I have always loved naming and defining). The syndrome describes a case where a person who is willing to end a certain relationship, and arrives seemingly ready to the break-up situation, will have a hard time accepting it when he is the rejected side, even though logically the situation fits the goals he set out for himself originally. We both laughed from the description and had a good mood. If it’s not clear, I am very proud to name it, and a (very short :)) search through the web didn’t bring up something similar. Since I found out about it, I have noticed this syndrome many times: with spouses, friends and colleagues. Being aware of it helps me make sure I remember my original purpose in these cases, and many times merely pointing it out makes the other person get back to himself and realize what’s good for him. The partner, by the way, called us the day after and said that we should stop working together for now, and that it perhaps it will be fitting again in the future. Time gives such a wonderful perspective. That’s it – I hope you enjoyed it. Spread the word 🙂 Good night, Yair]]>

shortly after having tag-teamed your ex-friend into a state of crying.
